St. Cedd (also known as St. Sæd), Bishop of London, is commemorated on January 7 in the English Martyrology. In this reading from The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, we hear the powerful account of a holy missionary bishop who labored zealously for the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons in 7th-century England. St. Cedd was the brother of St. Chad of Lichfield and was formed in holiness at Lindisfarne, under the spiritual tradition of St. Aidan and St. Columba. Ordained bishop by St. Finan, he became the Apostle of the East Saxons, founding monasteries, converting kings, building churches, and living a life of severe asceticism, prayer, and obedience.
